The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers said Tuesday it is sticking with its recommendation to build a levee on the east bank of St. John the Baptist Parish, reducing the risk of hurricane storm surge for about 60,000 residents.
In confirming its preference for the so-called Alternate C alignment, the corps said it suggests building the $881 million levee from the Bonnet Carre Spillway at Montz to the Hope Canal at Garyville. For communities farther uprviver, the plan calls for providing money to elevate structures -- but no levee.
