NEW ORLEANS - The debate over the size of Orleans Parish Prison will resume Tuesday in City Council chambers.

According to our partners at City Business, the Council's Criminal Justice Committee will discuss whether one of the existing buildings - Templeman 5 - should remain open. It was set to close once the new jail is complete in April.

In 2010, city officials capped the number of beds at the new jail at just over 1,400. But the new prison doesn't include mental health facilities or areas for inmates that must be kept separate from most prisoners.

The committee will begin its meeting at 2 p.m.
