BATON ROUGE, La. -- A proposed property tax increase to beef up police and fire protection in New Orleans zipped through a House committee Thursday at the state capitol.
The bill would increase both special taxes for police and fire protection from 5 to 6 mils.
The increase would amount to an extra $30 a year in taxes on a home costing $200,000 and would bring in an additional $5.9 million in 2015.
