The Historic District Landmarks Commission shot down a developer’s request Wednesday to tear down six Central Business District buildings to make room for a 21-story hotel tower, with one commission member saying the request shows a “blatant disregard” for the city’s zoning laws and master plan.

The final decision is up to the City Council. The site is in Councilwoman LaToya Cantrell’s district.

The co-development team of Wischermann Partners Inc. and Jayshree Hospitality is seeking to replace the antebellum buildings at Canal and Tchoupitoulas streets with a 250-foot-high hotel.
