With the NFL draft’s first day looming Thursday, The Advocate’s Sheldon Mickles ranks the Saints’ best draft picks — round by round — in franchise history. (Rounds 8 through 17, no longer part of the NFL draft, are compiled into one group.)

First round

1. T William Roaf (1993/8th overall)

A 2012 Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee, Roaf was a dominant run- and pass-blocker and a four-time All-Pro pick.

2. RB Deuce McAllister (2001/23rd overall)

CHALMETTE, La. (AP) - St. Bernard Parish authorities have contracted with a consultant group to examine the parish's water system as the Parish Council considers a proposal to raise water and sewer rates.

Nola.comThe Times-Picayune reported parish officials have discussed raising rates by as much as 34 percent. They want Baton Rouge-based UtiliWorks to assess the system and help determine what, if any, rate increase is needed.

The rate increase has been proposed as part of an effort to help improve infrastructure in a water system that has been scrutinized since a brain-eating amoeba was found in the system last fall.

Saturday night at the Saenger Theatre was, in the words of Dr. John, “Such a Night.”

A parade of stars came together for “The Musical Mojo of Dr. John: A Celebration of Mac & His Music.” The big names included New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival headliners Bruce Springsteen and John Fogerty; Mavis Staples; Aaron, Cyril and Charles Neville; Widespread Panic; Allen Toussaint; Irma Thomas; Jason Isbell; and Warren Haynes.

Gregg Allman had been listed among the evening’s top-billed guests.

In an effort to find the next player or players who’ll help them win — now and in the future — the Saints, like most NFL teams, leave no stone unturned in a never-ending search for talent.

Players come in all shapes and sizes, and similarly, come from schools big and small. And the Saints — especially since Sean Payton’s arrival in 2006 — have made identifying the “little guys” a huge part of an important process.

With the draft just days away, here's a look my final mock draft for all of the Saints draft picks.

1.) Brandin Cooks WR Oregon St. (27th overall)

I'm sticking with Cooks. There are certainly solid cases for other players/receivers here but I still believe Cooks can give the Saints a different dimension from the slot. Remember, Lance Moore was a precise route runner who was in the right spot at the right time. Cooks is much quicker/faster version of Moore who, if he learns the system quickly can equal the production of some of Moore's best seasons.

The New Orleans Police Department is asking for the public's help in locating a vehicle that was involved in a hit and run. The incident occurred Friday in the early morning hours near the intersection of Socrates Street and Shirley Drive in Algiers.

According to police, the 43-year-old victim was standing near the opened drivers-side door of his parked pickup truck when he and the truck were struck by a gray vehicle, possibly a small four-door SUV.

The third-graders in Tiffany Hoke’s English language arts class bent their bodies forward in the shapes of little crescent moons, touching fingertips to create the arch of a house. Others crouched underneath. An unsure but animated voice narrated the story of a girl who runs away from home and forms an unlikely friendship with a donkey.

“It’s all a part of growing the business. We learned a lot, and we loved being in Marrero and look forward to doing something else there.” Wendell Pierce, actor and co-owner of Sterling Farms

Sterling Farms’ flagship grocery store on Lapalco Boulevard in Marrero, which opened a year ago amid national attention for its mission of bringing healthy food to underserved communities, will close this week.

The store drew national media attention when it opened, including a visit from Michelle Obama while the Obama administration was touting its Fresh Food Initiative to bring healthy grocery options to so-called “food deserts.

    Arcade Fire brings serious energy

For years, the final sets on the Acura Stage at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival each year have been the musical equivalent of home cooking.

For more than a decade, the Neville Brothers owned one of those slots. But last year and again this year, Trombone Shorty occupied the final Sunday spot, with Arcade Fire preceding him.

When the Montreal-based band first played Jazz Fest in 2011, it seemed like a reach into the unfestlike world of indie rock.

Saturday night, Dr. John made his only New Orleans appearance during the 2014 New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, not at the Fair Grounds but at the Saenger Theatre for an all-star celebration of his music.

In recent years, the changing of the guard at Jazz Fest has become noticeable with the loss of the Radiators and the Neville Brothers as festival closers, and this year Allen Toussaint, Irma Thomas and George Porter Jr. were among the few old-guard funk and R&B musicians to play full sets.

    SLIDELL, LA (WVUE) -

Charles Preston, M.D. is the new coroner-elect in St. Tammany Parish after beating out challenger Leanne Truehart, M.D. in Saturday's election, with 58 percent of the vote.

Preston says his win closes a painful chapter for taxpayers and opens the door to a bright, and transparent, future.

Having run a truly grassroots campaign, Preston is now savoring the labors of his hard work.

"I think it's really two messages, one is that people are read for a change and the other is they believe I am that change," said Preston.
