MIAMI (AP) - The Southeast is "exceptionally vulnerable" to sea level rise, extreme heat events, hurricanes and a decreasing freshwater supply, according to the National Climate Assessment released Tuesday.

The 11-state region - home to seven major ports and fast-growing metropolitan areas that hug the coastline - is both a major producer and consumer of energy, and it has already suffered more billion-dollar disasters than any other part of the country. Disruptions to infrastructure could spell an economic disaster for areas dependent on tourism.

Resident Ken Caron said he came home Friday to discover a cell phone on his front porch. That prompted him to check his surveillance camera footage, and what he found surprised him.

Caron said 15-year-old Coulter looked in his mailbox, tried to open the front door and then pulled the leaves off his tree before leaving.

NEW ORLEANS – A federal judge has approved a new method of calculating BP oil spill payments for certain types of businesses.

The change affects thousands of so-called variable profit businesses – mostly law firms, accountants, construction companies and farms that spend their money on an item or project but derive revenues from it at a wholly different time of year.

The new calculation method means that related revenues and expenses will be matched, instead of just comparing the business’ revenues and expenses in a three-month period before the spill with the same three-month span after the spill.
